An overcooked engine starter/winch battery.
Horrible smell in boat yesterday afternoon tracked down to a boiling/smoking battery!
Diagnosis is that it went flat through long period of no use which is why have had to switch in the domestic batteries to start engine.
Heavy use of winch to get anchor up killed it further. Alternator therefore continued to chuck charge in which it could not take - remained flat - more charge = cooked battery!
Nothing caught fire thankfully and after a few hours of sweaty work removing heavy duty cables....
...we managed to extract the dead battery.
Now just have to find a new one and install it!
Well done on a successful first leg of the journey home. I pulled up the webcam of the marina - just in case I could see a couple of strange fellows dragging a heavy battery across the pontoon - but no such luck. Looking a little overcast! Don't forget it's the match tonight - 8pm BST (not GMT) regardless of longitude. Cheers. Bob
