Sao Jorge (2)

Dam, I have just lost two hours worth of writing a post about our big walk on Sao Jorge and so I'm afraid this is a much summarised version.

On Tuesday we got up early and took the daily 0735 the bus to Calheta and looked round the still to be officially open museum, which was a wonderful space converted from an old Tuna canning factory. Though short on exhibits it was managed by a most enthusiastic and informative curator who showed us around and explained the peoject...

The machinery above is old Tuna canning equipment. and the views are of the harbour from the museum's balcony.

Calheta was small and sleepy and without access to a car to explore the island independently we decided we would depart for Ponta Delgada that evening. However, our taxi driver turned out to be a local tour guide who told us about the island and persuaded us to stay on another day and do one od the islands dramatic walks.

The island used to export wine and oranges to the UK in days gone by but grape disease and I think competition by other orenge producers killed that off.

Some views from our walk...

FYI  - arrived Ponta Delgada 0430 local time Friday 6th August after a pleasant down wind sail from Velas, having left there at 1900 on Wednesday evening after our walk.
